📝 Grade Calculator

This grade calculator takes the scores you have already earned and the weight each one carries, and returns your current weighted grade. If you also enter the weight of a final exam and the overall grade you are aiming for, it returns the exact score that final must earn — and tells you when the target is no longer reachable.

Understanding the score you need

The bands describe how demanding the required final score is relative to a conventional 0–100 marking scale. They say nothing about how hard the exam itself is.

Score needed on the finalBandWhat it means
Up to 70ComfortableThe target survives an average or below-average final
70.01 – 90AchievableRequires a solid performance, in line with a good result
90.01 – 100DemandingRequires close to a perfect paper
Above 100Not reachableThe target cannot be met from the final alone
  • Institutions differ in how they round a final percentage to a letter grade, and some apply a rule that a failed final fails the course regardless of the weighted average. Check the course syllabus, which is the governing document.
  • If the weights entered do not total 100, this calculator does not rescale them. It reports the weight graded so far so you can see exactly what the current grade covers.

What a weighted grade is

A weighted grade is an average in which each piece of work counts in proportion to its importance rather than equally. If homework is worth 20% of a course and the final exam 35%, a point gained on the exam moves the overall grade nearly twice as far as a point gained on homework.

The current grade shown here is calculated over the work that has actually been graded, not over the whole course. That is the figure that answers the question students are usually asking — how am I doing so far — and it does not require the weights entered to add up to 100, because real syllabi frequently do not.

The score required on a final exam follows from the same arithmetic run backwards. It can exceed 100, and when it does the honest answer is that the target is not reachable through the final alone.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Enter the percentage score for each graded item, separated by semicolons — for example 88; 92; 75.
  2. Enter the weight of each item in the same order, also separated by semicolons. The lists are matched position by position.
  3. Enter the weight of the final exam, or 0 if there is no final still to sit.
  4. Enter the overall grade you are aiming for.
  5. Read the required score on the final. If it is above 100, the target cannot be reached from the final alone.

The formula behind weighted grades

earned = sum(score_i x weight_i)
weight graded = sum(weight_i)
current grade = earned / weight graded
required final = (target x (weight graded + final weight) - earned) / final weight

Multiply each score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight graded so far. That is the weighted average of completed work.

To find the score needed on a final, set the projected overall grade equal to the target and solve. The projected overall grade is the earned points plus the final's contribution, divided by the total weight once the final is included.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging scores without their weights. An unweighted mean answers a different question and is usually optimistic where the heaviest assessment is still to come.
  • Entering scores and weights in different orders. The two lists are matched position by position.
  • Entering points earned instead of percentages, for example 17 out of 20 rather than 85.
  • Including the final exam's weight in the weights list as well as in the final-weight field, which double-counts it.
  • Assuming a required score above 100 is a calculation error. It is the correct answer that the target is out of reach through that assessment.

How do I calculate my current grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add the products, then divide by the total weight of the work graded so far. With scores of 88, 92 and 75 carrying weights of 20, 20 and 25, the earned points are 5,475 over a graded weight of 65, giving a current grade of 84.23%.

What score do I need on my final exam?

Required final = (target x (weight graded + final weight) - earned points) / final weight. Continuing the example above, aiming for 80% overall with a final worth 35% requires (80 x 100 - 5,475) / 35 = 72.14% on the final.

Why is the score I need above 100?

Because the remaining assessment does not carry enough weight to close the gap, even with a perfect paper. The result is arithmetically correct rather than an error, and it means the target has to change or another route — a resit, a grade replacement policy — has to be found.

Do my weights have to add up to 100?

Not for this calculator. The current grade is computed over the weight actually graded, and that figure is reported alongside it so you can see the coverage. If your syllabus weights do total 100, the graded weight tells you how much of the course is already decided.

Does a weighted grade convert directly to a letter grade?

Not universally. Institutions set their own percentage-to-letter mappings and their own rounding rules, and some impose additional requirements such as passing the final independently. The course syllabus and the registrar's published scale govern.
