Summing all the step volumes gives the total concrete volume.

The formula behind the stair volume

Step i volume (m³) = i × Rise (m) × Run (m) × Width (m)
Total volume (m³) = Σ (Step i volume) for i = 1 to number of steps
Bags = (Total volume × 1.10) ÷ 0.0095 m³ per 20 kg bag

For each step i (counting from the bottom, starting at 1), that step's volume equals its cumulative height — i × rise — multiplied by the run and the width, since each lower step must support the full height of concrete above it as well as its own tread. Total volume sums this across all steps.

Worked example: 4 steps with a 17.5 cm rise, 28 cm run and 90 cm width. Converting to meters (0.175 m rise, 0.28 m run, 0.90 m width), the volumes are step 1: 1 × 0.175 × 0.28 × 0.90 ≈ 0.0441 m³, step 2: 2 × 0.175 × 0.28 × 0.90 ≈ 0.0882 m³, step 3: ≈ 0.1323 m³, step 4: ≈ 0.1764 m³, summing to a total of about 0.441 m³.

Common mistakes

  • Treating each step as the same size block instead of accounting for the increasing cumulative height of lower steps, which understates total volume.
