What is board and batten?

Board and batten is a siding and paneling style built from wide vertical boards (or flat sheet goods) with narrow vertical strips — battens — covering the joints or applied decoratively at regular intervals. Historically the battens sealed the gaps between sawn boards on barns and farmhouses; in modern practice the style also appears as engineered-wood or fiber-cement siding panels with applied battens, and as painted interior feature walls where battens are fixed over drywall or sheet paneling.

The estimating problem is a fencepost count: battens sit at both ends of the wall plus at every spacing interval between, so the count is the wall length divided by the on-center spacing, rounded down, plus one. Spacing is a design choice — narrower spacing (30–40 cm) reads more traditional and busy, wider spacing (50–60 cm) more modern — and is often adjusted slightly so battens land symmetrically and clear windows and doors.

The formula behind board and batten

Battens = floor(Wall length ÷ Spacing) + 1
Batten length (m) = Battens × Wall height
Board area (m²) = Wall length × Wall height × 1.10

The batten count uses the fencepost formula: the wall length divided by the on-center spacing, rounded down, plus one — because a batten stands at the start of the wall as well as at each interval. Total batten length multiplies the count by the wall height, and the board area multiplies wall length by height with 10% added for offcuts and waste.

Worked example: a 5 m wall at 2.4 m high with battens every 40 cm needs floor(5 ÷ 0.4) + 1 = 13 battens, each 2.4 m long — 31.2 linear meters of batten stock — over 5 × 2.4 × 1.1 = 13.2 m² of board or sheet material including waste.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the +1 end batten — dividing length by spacing counts the intervals, not the battens, and leaves the layout one short.
  • Measuring spacing between batten edges instead of on center — edge-to-edge spacing plus the batten width is the true on-center figure.
  • Starting the layout from one corner without checking symmetry, which strands a visibly narrow odd bay at the far end; center the layout or tweak the spacing instead.
  • Buying exactly the computed sheet area with no waste — cuts around windows, doors and outlets consume material, which is why 10% is added here.
