What does a tile calculator do?

A tile calculator converts a floor or wall area into a count of individual tiles by dividing the area (plus a waste margin) by the area of a single tile. Tile dimensions are entered in centimeters and converted to a per-tile area in square meters, so the same calculator works for small mosaic tiles and large-format floor tiles alike.

The waste allowance covers tiles lost to cutting at edges and around fixtures, breakage during handling, and the extra material required to match pattern or grain direction. A 10% allowance is the widely used trade default for straight (grid) layouts; installers commonly increase this to 15% or more for diagonal, herringbone or other angled layouts because more tiles need to be cut at an angle rather than used whole.

The formula behind tile quantity

Tile area (m²) = (Tile width in cm ÷ 100) × (Tile height in cm ÷ 100)
Area including waste = Area × (1 + Waste %)
Tiles needed = ⌈Area including waste ÷ Tile area⌉

The area of one tile is its width multiplied by its height (converted from centimeters to meters). The number of tiles needed is the total area, inflated by the waste percentage, divided by the area of one tile, rounded up to the next whole tile.

Worked example: a 12 m² room tiled with 60 × 60 cm tiles (0.36 m² each) and a 10% waste allowance needs an inflated area of 12 × 1.10 = 13.2 m². Dividing by the tile area gives 13.2 ÷ 0.36 = 36.67, rounded up to 37 tiles — about 2.78 tiles per square meter.

  • Using a 10% waste margin for a diagonal or herringbone layout, which typically needs more due to angled cuts.
  • Entering the tile's nominal size instead of accounting for the grout joint width in tight layouts.
